Rare Documented Factory Presentation Colt Factory Engraved/Gold Plated Inscribed Police Positive Revolver with Pearl Grips, Leather Presentation Case and Colt Letter

This is a fabulous example of a super rare special order, one of a kind presentation Colt Police Positive double action revolver. This stunning revolver is accompanied by a Colt factory letter dated March 2010 that verifies the exact configuration of this revolver to include the special presentation inscription on the left side of the revolver. The Colt letter lists this revolver as a one gun shipment, that was shipped to Arms Selling Expense, Colt's Firearms Mfg. Company, New York Office attn; Albert Foster Jr. in "The Book of Colt Firearms", by R.L. Wilson, he states that there were only approximately 170 engraved Police Positive revolvers manufactured with only 7 ever having gold inlays. So how many were there that had a combination of engraved with blue and gold finishes? Probably not more that one, obviously making this a super rare, special order revolver. The Colt factory letter lists this revolver as having a level 2 engraving which includes the name "Michael J. Delehuntry" being engraved on the left side of the revolver. The engraving itself is composed of light scrolls on various major areas of the revolver covering approximately 1/4 of the metal surfaces. The revolver has received a very high polish blue finish on the metal parts with a gold plated wash on the entire cylinder and ejector, the trigger, hammer and ejector rod. The barrel is marked on top with the Colt factory two-line address and patent dates, with the left side marked, "POLICE/POSITIVE-.38 SPECIAL". The Colt factory Rampant Horse trade mark is located on the left side of the frame with the special presentation inscription noted above, directly below the Colt horse. It is fitted with a beautiful set of mother of pearl grips with a Colt silver medallion at the top of each grip. This wonderful one of a kind presentation Colt revolver is housed in a 7 1/2 X 10 1/2 inch leather bound storage case with a French fitted interior, with green lining. The case holds the revolver along with a wooden cartridge block that holds 61 cartridges, (currently 57 included) along with a slot at the top of the case for a Colt nylon cleaning brush.

Very fine. The barrel frame and grip strap retain 98% plus original blue finish. All marking and engraving is sharp and crisp. The gold components have been replated to original factory condition. The factory pearl medallion grips are also in excellent condition with beautiful colors on both sides. The display/storage case is in very fine condition with all the leather covering intact, showing wear and scuffing on the corners and edges overall. Although this wonderful revolver is listed as having 99% plus original finish it has been fired exactly three times as the face of three of the chambers show evidence of having been test fired, probably by the recipient. Notwithstanding that it’s still an extremely rare probably one of a kind, beautiful, factory engraved and gold plated DA Presentation revolver.

    Description:
Historic Frank H. Pulsifer Inscribed First Year Colt Model 1862 Police Revolver and Model 1852 Naval Officer's Sword and Scabbard, U.S.N. Model 1860 Cutlass, Two Confederate Attributed English Swords, Colt Bullet Mold, Carved Horn, and Research

This fascinating grouping is attributed to Civil War Naval Officer Frank Hamilton Pulsifer and is substantiated by an impressive research binder that includes notarized letters from Pulisfer's great-great grandson. The Model 1862 Police revolver is inscribed "Frank H. Pulsifer" on the back strap. It has the one line New York, U.S. America address on the top of the barrel, "COLTS/PATENT" on the left side of the frame, and the patent marking in one of the cylinder flutes. It has a small cone front sight and a smooth one piece grip. The serial number "5117" is marked on the bottom of the barrel, frame, trigger guard, and butt and places the date of manufacture in 1861. The W. H. Wilkinson & Sons Naval Officer's sword's sheath is inscribed "Frank H. Pulsifer" near the top. It and the sword have the standard designs and etching. (The corresponding notarized letter incorrectly identifies it as a Horstmann made sword.) The research file details Pulsifer's service and the documents (including a Treasury Department listing Pulsifer's service) indicate he served on board the gunboat USRC HARRIET LANE and later several other vessels including the iron clad USS NAUGATUCK (also known as the STEVENS). The HARRIET LANE was the first ship of a resupply fleet to arrive at Fort Sumter on the evening of April 11, 1861, and is considered to have fired the first naval shot of the Civil War when it engaged the NASHVILLE that evening. The vessels Pulsifer served on participated in several battles during the war including the bombardment of Fort Hatteras and the Atlantic blockade. After the destruction of Fort Hatteras, Pulsifer is said to have taken the included Model 1853 pattern British cavalry sword from the fort. The included F.S. Jung Naval cutlass is listed as having been taken from the Confederate schooner JOANNA WARD when it was captured off the Florida coast in 1862. The sword is marked "F.S. JUNG" on the left side and "*1861*" on the right on the ricasso. The New York Times from May 30. 1862 confirms the JOANNA WARD "was captured by the Harriet Lane on Feb. 24, 1862, off the port of St. Augustine." Also included is a "STEVENS" marked U.S. Navy Ames Model 1860 cutlass that Pulsifer likely acquired during his time aboard that vessel in 1863, a carved horn used as a powder measure with twisted snake designs, and a "COLTS/PATENT" double bullet mold. The Treasury document indicates that Pulsifer did not retire until 1905 and died in 1922 after what was clearly a long and eventful career.

Very good. The revolver retains traces of the original silver plating with an aged patina on the exposed brass and a brown patina on most of the other surfaces with various minor dings and light scratches. The grip is very good with more than half of the varnish remaining and some minor wear and small dings from handling and use. It is mechanically excellent with crisp markings. The officer's sword is fine overall. The blade is nice and bright with clear patterns and some spotting, and the brass components all have a nice aged patina. The two cutlasses are absent scabbards and are in good condition for Civil War weapons with well established patinas. The cavalry sword has fairly bright surfaces with speckled light pitting and a rounded point. The bullet mold is in good condition with several marks along the side, and the horn is in very good condition. This is a fantastic and fascinating grouping centered on a first year Colt Model 1862 Police with an inscription that also includes four desirable Civil War era swords, a nicely carved powder measure, and a bullet mold. Each of the main items are hard to come by, but their connection to a Civil War sailor who participated the earliest shots of the Civil War make them truly historic items.

Spectacular Cased Colonel Samuel Colt Presentation Colt Model 1862 Police Percussion Revolver

Manufactured in 1861, this is a spectacular example of a first year production cased Colt Model 1862 Police percussion revolver presented by Colonel Samuel Colt to D.H. Craig. It is known that Colt revolvers were specially inscribed and presented by Samuel Colt to government officials, military leaders, business associates and personal friends. This example is inscribed "D.H. Craig/with Compliments of Col Colt" on the back strap. As of this writing, D.H. Craig has not been identified. Nevertheless, Colt revolvers inscribed and presented by Samuel Colt are among the most desirable of all Colt percussion revolvers. The top of the barrel is marked "ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S.AMERICA", the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT", and "36 CAL" is marked on the left trigger guard shoulder. The 1850 patent marking is stamped on a cylinder flute. Full matching serial number is stamped on the underside of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap, rear of the cylinder, cylinder pin and barrel wedge. High polished blue finish, casehardened frame, hammer and loading lever with silver plated brass trigger guard and back strap. Fitted with a smooth one-piece varnished walnut grip. The partitioned rosewood case is lined in red velvet and contains a W. Pursall & Co. cap tin, lead balls, double eagle face Colt powder flask, combination tool (nipple wrench/screwdriver) and package of combustible cartridges for the Police revolver. The top of the lid has an unmarked brass inlaid initial shield that matches the lock escutcheon.

Excellent. The cylinder and barrel retain 95% plus bright original high polished blue finish showing some thinning to a gray. The loading lever, hammer and frame retain 97% plus original bright and vivid case colors. The grip straps retain nearly all of the original silver plating. The grips are also excellent with a few minor handling marks and retaining most of the original varnish. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine showing limited loss of the veneer, minor handling/storage marks and high spot wear on the faded lining. The excellent original powder flask and combination tool retain nearly all of their respective finishes. A high conditioned Colt Model 1862 Police percussion revolver presented by Colonel Samuel Colt that would enhance even the most advanced Colt percussion revolver collections!
